Decorating Tips & Advice
Picking A New Sofa
Your new sofa should compliment the interior design of your home. A traditional interior sofa should have rolled arms, contoured back, skirting or tufted cushions. If your style is more contemporary, look for cleaner lines, fewer flourishes and understated upholstery. The proportions of your room will also help you determine what height, length and depth of sofa would look best in your home. Need help? The staff of Macon Furniture Mart will be glad to assist you in finding the perfect sofa for your space.
Leather Is More Than Meets the Eye
Choose Aniline if you love the soft feel of leather and truly appreciate the beauty of each hide's unique natural markings, but expect only light to moderate use of the furniture. If you like the softness and texture of leather but also expect to use your furniture regularly select Semi-Aniline. Need a leather that will stand up to heavy use? Dyed/Pigmented leather should be your choice although it is not as soft. Choose Nubuck (suede-like) if you want to make a bold fashion statement and don't mind some maintenance and care.
Selecting the Proper Rug Size
Take a tape measure and define the size of your room. Keep at least 18 inches of bare floor exposed by the rugs edges. Larger rugs can make a room appear bigger. For the living room it is acceptible to have the front legs of the sofa sit on the edge of the rug. Dining room rugs should allow all chairs to sit comfortably while still on the rug. There are two different approaches for the bedroom. Rugs can be placed around the bed, with runners anchoring each sideand a larger rug at the foot of the bed. The other design tip is to place the rug horizontally under the bed with part of the rug exposed on either side.
It's All in the Flow
In large, open rooms, bring order by establishing zones for different activities: a seating arrangement for conversations and TV-watching, and a work area with a desk or table for homework, paperwork, and art projects. Set up your space according to your needs, rather than the labels a builder may have assigned. In addition to thinking about how furniture pieces relate to one another and the room, you'll want to think about how people enter, exit, and navigate the room. For living rooms, make sure people can easily get in and out of the seating grouping without having to awkwardly tango around a side table. If your room has several entries and exits, plan a clear path between these points.
